Do you ever have those days when all you want to do is eat? When you look in your bare cupboards and start trying to decide what you can do with a can of hearts of palm and a can of pimentos? Should we add fritos to that? I am having one of those days. I want mexican food, red meat, the fattening velvetta cheese and rotel chiles dip that friends serve for the holidays. I have never actually made it, I wonder if you can use hearts of palm?
I have always been fascinated by bees. I guess it’s because my Dad was a hobby beekeeper and a farmer for most of his life. All three of my kids had a bee costume at one time or another (I think it was the same costume recycled) and they also had a bee puppet that we loved to death (literally). I love the bee work ethic. I love honey. I love their coloring. I love their gentle buzzing sound, it relaxes me. Sadly, I am sure a lot of you know ,that there is some bad news in the bee world.
Remember this necklace? Well I wanted to give you the rest of the story. If you missed the first two chapters on the Duchess, please go back and read about her here and here. There is a post script to the iconic Queen Mary Pearl strand.
Friday the 13th wasn’t an unlucky day for Petra Diamonds Ltd.
On Friday, the company announced the recovery of another big blue rough diamond, this one a 122.52-carat stone found at the Cullinan mine in South Africa, which is considered one of the world’s top sources of blue diamonds.
Well, it has come and gone, graduation day for my youngest ducklings. It was yesterday and yes, it was wonderful, all 92 degrees of it! Add the week of steady congrats parties, the All Night Grad Party (I worked the roulette table) and work into the mix and it is a miracle I can even type.
One of the many perks of living in a large metropolitan area, is the abundance of cultural activities. Our area is blessed with tremendous museums. One of my favorite places to visit, is Hillwood, Marjorie Merriweather Post’s Washington, D.C. estate, which is now a museum. Following her divorce from her third husband, Joseph Davies in 1955, Marjorie purchased Hillwood, which remained her Washington residence for the rest of her life. Hillwood is surrounded by 25 acres of lawn and gardens in northwest Washington, on the edge of Rock Creek Park.
This has not been an easy post. Let me rephrase, if I had just stuck to the jewelry, it would have been really easy. Although I thought I had a grasp of their complexity, I will say, after much research, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, were very complicated people. Both had all kinds of issues…daddy issues, power issues, ivory tower issues, narcissistic tendencies….I could go on and on. Yes, they had a love story…..but it did not have the happy ending either of them anticipated. They did have fabulous wealth, they traveled extensively and they did meet extraordinary people but they kind of got “stuck” together. They both were used to getting their way. This is now going to be a two part post!
Happy Monday! I am very tired this morning. My husband and I and a great girlfriend of mine threw our three daughters (our two, her one) a high school graduation party yesterday. There were at least 80 kids, throw in some adults, a photo booth and heck yeah, it was a party! The photo booth was my friend’s idea and what a great idea it was. The kids loved it. A good time was had by all and I must say, our future looks bright with this great group of young people. Extraordinary people to be sure. One more thing, we are blessed to be surrounded by such wonderful friends and family, thank you one and all.
