I have had so many questions from customers about pearl lengths and types of pearls recently that I decided to do two more posts on the subject.
Here is a fun pearl fact. Did you know that among the world’s 8,000 species of mollusk only about 20 produce pearls? They can be found in rivers and seas from Scotland to French Polynesia.
Here are the traditional lengths of pearl necklaces.
A very short, tight fitting strand, 12-13 inches long.
Grace Kelly wearing her signature pearl collar.
Not quite as tight as the collar, usually 14-16 inches.
Scarlett Johansson wearing a pearl choker.
Usually 17-19 inches, a very flattering length.
Angelina Jolie wearing a three strand princess length necklace. She actually wears a lot of pearls.
Pearl lengths go in and out of fashion, just like any type of jewelry. In the United States for many, many years, the matinee length which is 20-24 inches, ruled.
Jackie Kennedy wearing a three strand matinee length pearl necklace.
This necklace is usually 26-36 inches in length and can be quite dramatic.
Katherine Heigl wearing a three strand opera length pearl necklace.
A rope of pearls is usually over 37 inches long. It can be doubled or tripled.
Princess Diana wearing a double rope strand of pearls.
Multiple strands of varying lengths.
Rhianna looking fabulous with all of her pearl strands.
The multiple strand fashion definitely comes and goes. It has been popular all over the world with both men and women. Queen Elizabeth I was a lover of multiple strands of pearls as was Queen Alexandra.
