Don’t worry, I am not going to rehash the best Oscar looks. The repetitive rehashing of who wore what started last night and will continue throughout the day, extend to the rest of the week and those that do that will still be talking about it in next week’s glossy magazines. However, I am going to talk about the diamond earrings that Angelina Jolie wore to last night’s Oscars. Please see the photo below. In the top photo, they look like a really nice pair of diamond earrings. In the photo below that, where she is wearing them, you realize how big and important they really are. I know that they are not for everyone, but I think they are magnificent. The combined diamond weight is over 42 carats! Angelina has formed a partnership with jeweler Robert Procop and the two of them have built the brand, the Style of Jolie Collection. They create high end jewelry pieces using statement gems. It is a charitable enterprise where all proceeds from the sales are used to build schools for girls in impoverished countries through the Education Partnerships for Children of Conflicts, an organization co-founded by Jolie.
The business model is rather simple, they design the jewelry together, she wears the jewelry and then the pieces are sold. When a piece sells, they build another school.
Procop, the other half of this partnership, is a jeweler’s jeweler. He currently owns and operates, Robert Procop Exceptional Jewels where he sells his own creations and buys and sells statement gemstones. Before he went out on his own, he was CEO of Asprey & Garrard. He is the one that led the organization through a difficult period by returning the two houses into the separate entities they once were. He stayed on with Garrard for awhile before branching out on his own.
His true skill is being one of the best and most knowledgeable diamond and gemstone dealers in the world. He has been buying and selling successfully since he was a teenager. His network for finding prime material and buying it for less than it costs to mine, is legendary. He knows whom to call and where to look for the best material. He is no slacker in the design end of the business either.

According to Procop, the secret to successful gemstone purchasing “is just buying them at the right price. Since I need to sell them to the wholesale trade and there are customers looking for an investment, you have to buy below the market. So they know you are buying at a competitive market price”.
His knowledge of gemstones and diamonds is so great and he is so respected, that he has become the editor in chief for the next edition of Famous Diamonds, considered by many to be the world’s most important book about diamonds. It was first published by Lord Ian Balfour, a noted diamond historian and a longtime employee of DeBeers.
“I have been honored by Ian Balfour to pass on his legacy,” Procop said. “(Balfour) is very good at finding these romantic stories. He always says the diamond business is not only full of trading but full of everything from emperors to smugglers”.
Another look at life behind the scenes of jewelry. It would seem that Angelina chose the right partner.
