I have always been a fan of the cuff bracelet, especially a pair of cuff bracelets. It’s a bold look and one that comes and goes out of fashion.
I have also always been a Jackie Kennedy fan. As a young girl I could not get enough of her. I loved seeing any photo of her. I loved her easy, comfortable yet very sophisticated, fashion style. She seemed to lead such a glamourous life. She did lead that life but also had so much heartache and turmoil. I think that is why many of us were so taken with her.
I recently saw a photo of her talking to Muhammed Ali with an interesting bracelet on. It turns out, it was a pair of bracelets. Jackie O’s bracelets were by Van Cleef & Arpels. They have twice sold at auction, once at the much hyped sale of her jewelry collection in 1996 for $167,500 and for the second time in 2011 for $128,500.

In the photo with Ali, Jackie is wearing the matching large, door knocker earrings. The heaviness of the earrings and bracelets were very much in keeping with the oversized feel of 1970’s jewelry. That look is back! After she was photographed in public wearing the cuffs, the design skyrocketed in popularity.

The hammered “manchette” cuff bracelet is right back in style. A manchette is special glove cover worn by fencers, specifically sabreurs, on their weapon hand. Manchette simply means “cuff” in French. It was adapted into the jewelry world at some point or another.
