There is a wonderful new book out called Painting Central Park by Roger Pasquier. I think we all can agree that Central Park itself is a work of art drawing artists from 1860 (the time the park was created) to today. Since its creation, the park has transformed the social and recreational life for New Yorkers.
Some of the American artists who’s work is shown in the book are Winslow Homer, George Bellows, William Merritt Chase, Childe Hassam, Milton Avery and Helen Frankenthaler. Europeans include Marc Chagall, David Hockney and George Grosz. Contemporary artists include Christo and Richard Estes.
George Bellows, a Day in June, 1913
Maurice Prendergast, Central Park, 1900
David Hockney, View from the Mayflower Hotel, New York (Evening) 2002
William Zorach, Fifth Avenue from the Plaza
Christo, The Gates Collage
I just love the idea of this book – there is so much to draw upon.
