A little slice of different is very good for the soul. You know how I feel about creativity….let it reign, let it out!
The contemporary jewelry designer, Suzanne Syz is renowned for her highly original and unconventional designs which draw on many sources for inspiration. Born in Zurich and educated in Paris, she moved to New York City in the 1980s and became part of the circle of Andy Warhol, Jean Michel Basquiat, Julian Schnabel, Francesco Clemente and Jeff Koons.
You can see their influence in every piece of her work, especially Koons and Warhol’s. “I began creating my own jewelry because I could never find what I wanted,” says Suzanne Syz. For the Swiss designer, jewelry was always too serious, constrained in the strait jacket of solemnity. Taking time to establish her own creative aspirations, the designer finally let her imagination run wild in the 1990s. Fuelled by her dreams, fears and deepest desires, Suzanne Syz chose colored stones and unconventional materials to bring to life her designs while trying to remain as close as possible to her original ideas.
Her work has matured nicely and is now divided into three collections, natural, pop and contemporary. The natural and contemporary lines are a little more conservative and geared more to the masses, they are more marketable. The pop collection is fun and outrageous.
Throughout all three collections are radiant colors, the audacious compositions and unusual materials which have become trademarks of Suzanne Syz’s work.
Suzanne Syz left New York and now lives and works in Geneva where her showroom is an extension of her creative existence. There are three steadfast features you will always find in her showroom. The color violet (her signature color), the 1950s-1960s décor and a selection of her art collection which includes a marshmallow Nelson sofa, a Warhol stitched photograph of Liza Minelli and Guy Bourdin photographs from the 1960s and 1970s. There is also a Sylvie Fleury cover of Kate Moss.
It is clear that the material expertise, technical knowledge and artistry of her Geneva based team of craftsmen are indispensable for turning Syz’s unconventional and often highly complex designs into glamorous and one-of-a-kind jewelry creations which have charmed clients such as Elizabeth Taylor, Princess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis and the Archduchess Francesca von Habsburg-Thyssen. This is also the city where JAR produces his work, no question that these are the best craftsmen in the world.
